Vol. 398 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Corps Personnel Uniform.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

30 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Defence if he will commission a new and distinctive uniform for the Air Corps recognising their unique status within the Defence Forces.

No change in the uniform for Air Corps personnel is contemplated at present.

Given that this body are unique within the Defence Forces and that the Naval Force, for instance have their distinctive uniform, is it not appropriate that the Air Corps should have their own uniform?

My personal view is that they have a very smart uniform at present but I will look into the matter.

I would not wish for one moment to deprecate any of the uniforms worn by members of the Defence Forces but is the Minister aware that there is a very strong feeling within the Air Corps that they, like the Naval Service, might be entitled to or benefit from a distinctive uniform of their own?

I will look into the matter and come back to the Deputy, but I would not think that this is one of the priorities within my Department.

Bending in whatever way I can the procedures of the House, may I advise the Minister that on a recent visit to the Air Corps, this ranked as one of the top three demands of the personnel?

I will discuss the matter with the officer in command and if there is such demand we can consider it. As the Deputy says, the Naval Service have their own uniform.
