Vol. 398 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Posts and Barracks.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

48 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has to close military posts and barracks; if any new barracks are planned; the locations to which existing troops will be transferred when posts and barracks are closed; and the plans, if any, he has to provide extra accommodation at Gormanston Camp, County Meath, to cope with the transfer of troops to that post.

The Government have decided to close and dispose of Collins Barracks, Dublin, and to relocate the troops serving there to new and refurbished accommodation in McKee Barracks and Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin. The military post at Fort Dunree is also being closed and the troops serving there will be relocated locally to Rockhill Military Post, Lifford Military Post or FCA appointments. The old military barracks in Cavan will be closed and the troops stationed there will be relocated in the new barracks at Cavan when it opens later this year. The troops stationed at the military post at Cootehill will also be relocated to the new military barracks in Cavan and Monaghan military barracks. The premises at Cootehill which is held by my Department on lease will, on vacation by the military personnel, be handed back to the owners. The question of closing other military barracks and posts is being examined in my Department but no decisions have been taken yet. No new barracks are planned at present.

There are no plans to relocate troops at Gormanston Camp.
