Vol. 398 No. 4

Written Answers. - European Environment Agency.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

56 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs when a decision will be made on the siting of the headquarters of the European Environmental Agency- and if he is pressing to have it located in Ireland.

Agreement has been reached on the Community regulation establishing the European Environment agency and the regulation was adopted at the General Affairs Council yesterday. In our Presidency capacity, Ireland will make every effort between now and the end of June to arrive at a decision on the location issue so that the agency can begin its important work with the minimum of delay. The matter of the location must be decided by the Council of Ministers on the basis of unanimity.

We have proposed Dublin as an appropriate site for the agency, and have brought the merits of Dublin's candidature to the attention of our Community partners.
