Vol. 398 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Mayo Grants.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

70 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide the necessary finance to eliminate flooding in the Ballynacarragh area, County Mayo, which is a source of great inconvenience to local people who are unable to travel on this road and for which funds have already been requested by Mayo County Council in a submission to his Department in March 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

71 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance if a grant will be made available to improve drainage works on lands of persons (details supplied) in County Mayo.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 70 and 71 together.

While the Ballynacarragh and Clyard areas are situated in the Corrib-Headford River catchment area they are not included in the Corrib-Headford catchment drainage scheme carried out by the Commissioners of Public Works between 1967 and 1975 as the cost could not be justified on economic grounds. As their responsiblities in the area are now confined by statute to the maintenance of the completed works of the Corrib-Headford catchment drainage scheme, the commissioners are unable to undertake any additional works at this stage. Accordingly the question of my providing finance in this manner does not arise.
