Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - Car Related Crime.

Austin Currie

Ceist:

122 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice if he will compile a list of cars most vulnerable to theft and break-ins, in order to force car manufacturers to recognise their responsibilities in the war against car related crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not at all satisfied that the compilation of a list of the kind referred to in the question would be a prudent or productive course of action.

The Garda authorities consider that the problem of car-related crime can best be dealt with through crime prevention measures of the kind that they are constantly advocating — ensuring that vehicles are locked and made as secure as possible and not leaving possessions on display in a way that creates an incentive to theft. They also consider that car manufactures are becoming more conscious of the necessity to improve the security of cars and in recent years there has been an improvement in the type of locking systems and an increase in the number of alarms fitted to vehicles.
