Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - Refusal of Legal Aid.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

123 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kerry who is in receipt of unemployment assistance has been refused legal aid.

The Legal Aid Board are responsible for the administration of the scheme of civil legal aid and advice. This includes the assessment of applications for legal aid under the scheme to see that they comply with the various provisions relating to, for example, eligibility and merits tests. I have no function in these matters and, in fact, I am precluded under the terms of the scheme from exercising any power or control in relation to any particular case with which the board are or may be concerned.
