Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Animal Experiments.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

142 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the reported use of Irish greyhounds in experiments in laboratories in Spain and England he will invoke Article 24 of Directive 86/609/EC to ensure that Irish greyhounds do not end up in the animal experiments after their racing career has ended; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As required by Directive 86/609/EC my Department are currently drawing up a registration scheme for establishments which breed or supply animals for experimental purposes. Spain and the United Kingdom are also taking appropriate measures to comply with the directive.

I am anxious to give full protection to Irish greyhounds and other animals which might be used for experimental purposes and the directive provides an effective control mechanism for any trade in laboratory animals between member states.

When all countries have given full effect to the directive the facts pertaining to trade in laboratory animals can be established by member states and will enable me to more fully protect Irish greyhounds and other animals.
