Vol. 399 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drug Trial Application.

Dermot Fitzpatrick

Ceist:

120 Dr. Fitzpatrick asked the Minister for Health the number of applications made to him to conduct clinical trials of the DDI drug which is currently undergoing trials abroad for its effectiveness against HIV infection; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 29 May 1990 an application for a clinical trial in respect of DDI was received and is currently being considered by the NDAB and the Department of Health, under the Control of Clinical Trials Act, 1987. Prior to 29 May 1990, no approach was made to me to have this product tested in this country.

I am concerned about recent statements made which would tend to give a misleading impression regarding the effectiveness of this drug. I must point out that contrary to such statements the effectiveness of DDI has not yet been established and is subject to ongoing investigation through clinical trials.
