Vol. 399 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Curriculum.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

131 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if she has any proposals for including consumer education in the school curriculum; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The position is that elements of consumer education appear on the syllabus for such subjects as commerce and home economics. The relevant course committee of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment received a submission from the Consumer Association and incorporated many of their recommendations in the new business studies syllabus which was introduced onto the post-primary programme in September last. This subject is taken by almost 70 per cent of junior pupils and is an introductory programme to the business and economic environment.

Senior officials of my Department met representatives of the Consumers' Association of Ireland on 10 May 1990. It was agreed that the CAI would prepare an information sheet which my Department would include, together with a covering circular, in their mailing to schools after the summer holiday break.

In the case of primary schools, the report of Primary Curriculum Review Body has just been presented to me. All aspects of the curriculum will be reviewed in light of recommendations made by the review body.
