Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Early Retirement.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

22 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance if he has any proposals to allow public servants to retire early with improved pension benefit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in my Budget Statement, the early retirement terms will be available in 1990 on a very restricted basis, that is, only to staff who have been identified as surplus to requirements. The numbers involved will not be large.

(Limerick East): Does the Minister envisage any specific proposals for the early retirement of school teachers?

No. The application of the early retirement scheme will be very limited. It will be applied in certain specific areas, in the Office of Public Works and the Department of Health and, to a very limited extent, in the Department of Education, the Land Commission, FÁS and Teagasc. In no circumstances will people who have left under the early retirement scheme be replaced.

(Limerick East): Will the terms be the same?

For the limited areas in which they apply, they will be the same.
