Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

225 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health the date on which the chief executive officer of the South Eastern Health Board was requested by his Department not to take account of the family income supplement in determining eligibility for medical cards, in advance of regulations to this effect being made; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department wrote to the chief executive officer of the South Eastern Health Board on 11 April 1990 requesting that family income supplement should not be taken into account in determining eligibility for medical cards in advance of regulations to this effect being made. A draft of these regulations will be laid before each House of the Oireachtas, with a resolution for their approval as soon as possible. In the meantime, health boards are acting in accordance with my request not to take account of family income supplement in determining eligibiltiy for medical cards. If the Deputy has a particular case in mind where a medical card is being denied in these circumstances he might contact me on the matter.
