252 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the proposed regional athletics centre for Sligo; if national lottery funds have been designated for it; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
My Department has no record of an application for an athletics centre all-weather running track for Sligo.
As the Deputy is no doubt aware the Government decided late in 1988 to amalgamate my Department's capital grant scheme for the provision of recreational facilities with the amenity grants scheme operated by the Department of the Environment.
Under the new scheme all grants are now allocated by the Minister for the Environment to projects recommended by the local authorities who are also responsible for processing the applications. All applications for grant-aid now fall due for consideration under this scheme.
