Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Environmental Information Service.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

53 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the progress which has been made to establish the ENFO shop and service; if a premises has been identified or acquired; if any staff have been employed; the information which will be provided and to whom; and the amount which has been spent to date on this project.

A premises at 17, St. Andrew Street, has been acquired to accommodate ENFO — the environmental information service. A staff of three has so far been assigned to work directly on the establishment of the service and staff in the environmental research unit are also involved. Six hundred thousand pounds has been allocated this year for the establishment of ENFO and to date £150,000 has been paid out, mainly in respect of fitting out of the premises.

ENFO will provide information across the broad range of environmental issues and topics through leaflets, other publications, video and computer. It will also operate a specialised environmental library, provide access to international data basis and establish a national network to distribute information at local level.
