Ceist:212 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education, in view of the fact that the teachers unions have expressed grave reservations regarding the new leaving certificate grading system, if she has any plans to review the system.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 211 and 212 together.
The proposed new grading system at the leaving certificate was arrived at after the most careful consideration and following detailed consultation with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. While I am aware that one teachers' union is not in agreement with the proposal, I am confident that the new system will provide a more equitable assessment of student performance at the leaving certificate.
No changes are propsed in the grading system for the junior certificate examinations.
