56 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there is no provision for the payment of substitutes in national schools when teachers are absent on course days; that these absences give rise to considerable disruption; the plans she has to remedy this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
The granting of extra personal vacation, earned by teachers who attend approved in-service courses, is subject to the approval of the board of management of the school. My Department has no plans to provide for the payment of substitutes where teachers are absent on course days. It is a matter for the school authorities to make satisfactory arrangements for the conduct of the absent teacher's class and care of the pupils in the absence of the teacher.
