Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Report on Legal Profession.

Dan Wallace

Ceist:

171 Mr. Wallace asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the action, if any, which has been taken in relation to the report by the Fair Trade Commission on the legal profession; if he intends to take any action on the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With a view to stimulating debate on the matter the Government decided to publish the Fair Trade Commission's report of their study into restrictive practices in the legal profession on 5 July 1990 and submissions were invited from the public and interested groups. Submissions from interested parties have been furnished as recently as last week.

Some of the issues raised in the report are being dealt with in the proposed Solicitors (Amendment) Bill which is being prepared by the Minister for Justice. I intend, following full consideration of the report's recommendations and submissions thereon, to bring proposals for further follow-up action to Government as expeditiously as possible.
