Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

207 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the widespread concern among residents in the Dún Laoghaire area, County Dublin about the proposed removal of the Garda station from central Dún Laoghaire; and if he will investigate the possibility of purchasing a site in central Dún Laoghaire or, if necessary, procuring the site owned by the Department of the Marine, having regard to the fact that the needs of the gardaí and the public should be given overall priority.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 206 and 207 together.

The Garda divisional headquarters building in Dún Laoghaire is in very poor condition and in urgent need of replacement.

As the site of the existing station could not accommodate the proposed new station it has been necessary to try to find an alternative site. Efforts to obtain part of the site adjacent to the Town Hall which is held by the Department of the Marine have been unsuccessful and the possibility of obtaining a site on Kill Avenue, adjacent to the new fire station, is at present being examined.
