Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Public Inquiry.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

255 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the date on which the public inquiry into the down stream crossing of the River Lee is due to recommence; when he expects to be in a position to announce the outcome of the inquiry; when construction work is likely to commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Last month, my Department proposed to Cork Corporation that this public inquiry should be resumed as soon as possible after 1 October. The corporation indicated that they would not be in a position to participate adequately at a resumed inquiry before 12 December because of the non-availability of key witnesses and advocates before that date. Accordingly, the inquiry will be resumed on 12 December.

I will give my decision on the mode of crossing at the earliest possible date following the completion of the public inquiry. Pending completion of the inquiry, it is not possible to say when the work is likely to commence. The necessary funding will be provided, when required.
