Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sligo Council Funding Application.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

258 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment if he has examined a recently renewed application from Sligo Borough Council for funds to complete the development of the Connaughton Road car park, Sligo, and to provide a new access link between Bridge Street and Connaughton Road; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that (1) the Connaughton Road car park was developed with the help of grants allocated by his Department but that the moneys made available for the project were not sufficient to complete the work of boundary fencing, walls and surfacing and that these have remained in an unfinished state for many years and (2) an essential part of this project, if the car park is to be properly used and of benefit to the town for the purposes of easing the bad traffic congestion caused by large trucks within the Stephen Street/Bridge Street area, is a link road between Bridge Street and Connaughton Road; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Primary responsibility for the planning and development of works on non-national routes, such as Connaughton Road/Bridge Street, is a matter for the local authority concerned, i.e. Sligo Corporation. The corporation may use the block grant for roads paid annually by my Department to supplement expenditure from their own resources on such works.

On 5 September 1990 the corporation submitted a request for special road grant assistance for improvement works at this location. This request is at present under consideration.
