Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Eye Treatment Funding.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

273 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health if funding will be available to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 who is seeking financial assistance for essential eye treatment in America; when a decision will be made in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The position in relation to this case is that to date no formal application for financial assistance has been received.

In August, 1988 the person in question wrote to the Department of Health requesting financial assistance towards the cost of eye treatment for her daughter in America. This request was forwarded to the Eastern Health Board for consideration. The board subsequently wrote to the person requesting submission of a formal application for funding, including documentary evidence concerning income, and a medical specialist's letter regarding her daughter's condition.

I understand that the Eastern Health Board will be prepared to consider the matter as sympathetically as possible on receipt of a formal application.
