284 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that adequate provision has been made in each health board area to provide the flu vaccine to all elderly and vulnerable people who may require it; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The World Health Organisation issued guidelines regarding influenza vaccine in May 1990. These recommendations were transmitted to the health boards by my Department on May 19th, 1990.
In this circular emphasis was placed on the need to vaccinate before the expected influenza "season" and to focus on particular at-risk groups. This advice was reiterated on 17 October, 1990. My Department has liaised with the health boards in relation to the implementation of these guidelines issued in May 1990 and the Department has been assured that the health boards have taken the necessary steps.
