Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shooting of Palestinian Arabs.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

82 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has called in the Israeli Ambassador to protest about the action by Israeli security in shooting 19 Arabs on 9 October 1990.

As the Deputy may be aware the member states of the European Community issued a statement on 9 October 1990 strongly deploring the use of excessive force by the Israeli occupying forces in repressing Palestinian demonstrations. Ireland fully subscribes to this statement.

I have not called in the Israeli Ambassador, who is resident in London, to protest about this incident. I am satisfied, however, that the Israeli authorities are in no doubt as to the position we have adopted. I am continuing to monitor closely developments in the Occupied Territories and will not hesitate to take appropriate action, either with our partners in the European Community or on a bilateral basis, as the occasion demands.
