Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Illegal Use of Rebated Hydrocarbon Oil.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

83 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Finance if he will re-examine the case of a person (details supplied) in County Dublin who was fined for the use of the wrong grade of diesel; and whether he will mitigate some of the fine due to this person's inability to pay.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that penalties totalling £2,000, mitigated to £1,500 were imposed by the courts on the person in question and her son for the illegal use of rebated hydrocarbon oil (marked gas oil). The penalties relate to two separate offences involving a motor vehicle owned by the person in question. In the circumstances of this case and taking account of the serious nature of the offences the Revenue Commissioners are unable to justify further mitigation.
