Vol. 403 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Grant.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

29 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will accede to a request by Kerry County Council to provide a special grant for road widening purposes from Listowel town to Dirha East, Listowel, County Kerry, in view of the high number of fatalities on this stretch of road.

As indicated in my reply to Question No. 36 of 28 February, 1990, I do not propose to make special road grant assistance available to Kerry County Council in this case.

Responsibility for the funding of road works on this regional road rests with the local authority. The authority may, at their discretion, deploy funding from within the discretionary grants for regional and county roads to meet the cost of works on the road.

The discretionary grants to the local authority for 1990 amounted to £3,023,000. This represents an increase of £600,000 or 25 per cent, compared with the road grant provision under the equivalent headings in 1989.
