Vol. 403 No. 2

Written Answers. - Wyckham (Dublin) By-Pass.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

54 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment if he will agree to the extension of the proposed Wyckham by-pass to Taney Road, Dublin 16, so as to provide a proper east-west by-pass and relieve the traffic congestion in the area of Dundrum village, Dublin 16; the reason his Department have refused to sanction such an extension to date; when the finance required for the Wyckham by-pass will be made available to Dublin County Council; and when sanction will be given for the by-pass to be built.

On 3 October 1986, my Department informed Dublin County Council that they had no objection, on engineering grounds, to the council's outline proposals for (a) a road link between Sandyford Road and Ballinteer Road, which is part of what is known as the Wyckham by-pass; (b) a north-south Dundrum Main Street by-pass; (c) the Dundrum relief road; and (d) improvements to Lower Churchtown Road.

These proposals, at an estimated cost of £6.5 million in 1986 prices, would significantly alleviate traffic problems in the area. The preparation of detailed plans for these works is a matter for the local authority.
It is intended that construction of the section of the Wyckham by-pass from Sandyford Road to Ballinteer Road, together with the upgrading of that part of the Ballinteer Road between the by-pass and the Southern Cross Route, will be carried out in conjunction with the Southern Cross Route which is scheduled for construction during the period 1992 to 1995, subject to the statutory procedures involved.
The extension of the Wyckham by-pass from Sandyford Road to Taney Road, has not been approved for road grant purposes because it was considered that the benefits in terms of reducing traffic flow through Dundrum Main Street would not warrant the level of expenditure that would be involved.
The question of providing a busway/light rail service to Dundrum is also being considered. This would also relieve traffic congestion in the Dundrum area.
