Vol. 403 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Mayo Road Development.

John Connor

Ceist:

61 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of funds provided by his Department for improvement works including funding under the Operational Programme for Road Development 1989-1993, and excluding funding for ordinary maintenance, in the years 1988, 1989 and 1990 on the national primary route N5 on the section between Swinford and Castlebar, County Mayo and the section between Strokestown and Carracastle, County Roscommon; and his views on whether arising from a number of recent fatal accidents, it is imperative that there is a fundamental re-examination of the way funding has been directed to improve this road in recent years.

I propose to circulate in the Official Report a tabular statement setting out the financial information requested. I am satisfied that all of the investment in question was necessary and justified on the basis of factors such as the reduction of road accidents, existing and expected capacity deficiency, average journey speed, impact on the environment, surface condition of the existing road, and ability of the road to carry increased vehicle weights.

Primary responsibility for the assessment of possible measures to improve safety on particular road, and for the execution of such measures, rests, of course, with the local authorities concerned.
