Vol. 403 No. 9

Written Answers. - Sale of North Wall (Dublin) Property.

Joseph Doyle

Ceist:

23 Mr. Doyle asked the Minister for the Marine when he intends to make a decision regarding an application by Dublin Port and Docks Board for his consent, under the Harbours Act, 1946, for the sale of a property at North Wall, Dublin 1; if his attention has been drawn to the heavy burden that the delay imposed on Dublin Port at a time when a major capital development programme is in hand and every effort is being made to stabilise costs; and if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the delay in giving consent has cost the board almost £250,000 to date and costs nearly £5,000 each week.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

46 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Marine the reasons for the delay in granting consent to Dublin Port and Docks Board, under section 159 of the Harbours Act, 1946, for the disposal of lands at North Wall, Dublin 1 for the sum of £2,151,000 as the sale was agreed in December 1989 and the interest lost was £250,000 million; if it has been brought to his attention that the purchasers have withdrawn from the contract because of the delay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 46 together.

The Harbours Act requires that the Minister for the Marine's consent is required for the disposal of property by harbour authorities. As the proposed disposal had implications for the development of the port area generally, the development of the Customs House Docks authority site and the proposed National Sports Centre site which adjoins it, I have been unable, so far, to consent to the sale. I understand the company concerned has now withdrawn its offer to the board in the matter. I would not rule out the sale of the property at a future date.
