Vol. 403 No. 9

Written Answers. - Accommodation for Disturbed Autistic People.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

80 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Health the progress which has been made for the provision of eight places for disturbed autistic people as advised to the parents of the mentally handicapped by letter (details supplied); if he will indicate when work will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Eastern Health Board have reviewed various housing options over the past year in north Dublin to accommodate an eight place residential unit for disturbed autistic people. Because of the specific needs of this patient category it has not been possible to find a suitable house in the north city/county area. At their November 1990 meeting the Eastern Health Board agreed to build a unit on their site at Maryfield, Swords for this service rather than to continue the option of house purchase. Plans are now being finalised by the board for this development with a view to having the facility completed as quickly as possible.
