Vol. 403 No. 9

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

John Connor

Ceist:

91 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial teachers in the primary sector sanctioned as first time appointments in the years 1988, 1989 and 1990; the names or locations of the schools where these new remedial teachers were appointed; and the ratio of remedial teachers to primary school pupil population in each one of the Twenty-six Counties in the State.

No remedial posts in primary schools were sanctioned in the years 1988 and 1989. I was pleased to be able to sanction 27 posts for remedial teachers as first time appointments in 1990.

It would be a matter for individual boards of management to indicate whether they have the services of a remedial teacher.

A table is attached showing (a) the number of pupils in primary schools in each of the Twenty-six Counties, (b) the number of remedial teachers employed and (c) the ratios involved. Remedial posts are sanctioned on the basis of priority of need and not on the basis of number of enrolments.
