Vol. 403 No. 9

Written Answers. - Participation in Third Level Education.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

92 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if her Department have carried out any study or monitoring of the participation rates in third level education of pupils from (a) individual second level schools, (b) categories of second level schools or (c) social-economic background; if her Department have recently received any such study; and the studies which have been brought to her attention on this topic.

The Higher Education Authority have published the following two reports which include data relating to (b) and (c) of the Deputy's question. (1) Participation in Higher Education: A National Survey by Patrick Clancy (1982); (2) Who Goes to College? A Second National Survey of Participation in Higher Education by Patrick Clancy (1988).

My Department have not undertaken any general study of the participation rates in third level education in respect of individual second level schools. Work in this area will form part of initiatives currently being considered to improve access to third level education for pupils in disadvantaged areas.
