Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rural Development Programme.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

101 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if it is intended to continue the integrated rural development programme in the Manorhamilton pilot area, County Sligo; the duration for which the programme will last; if it is intended to make greater funding available to the pilot area; if he will outline his plans as regards staff; if the experience so far in the area will lead to any changes in the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

102 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the Manorhamilton rural district integrated rural development pilot area and its co-ordinator will be allowed to continue its very effective and worthwhile work for another three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

103 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if it is intended to (1) continue the pilot schemes for the integrated rural development programme, (2) expand the programme to other areas, if so, the areas concerned and (3) if the experience to date suggests any change in the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 101, 102 and 103 together.

The pilot programme for integrated rural development was launched in October 1988 in 12 selected areas so as to gain the experience necessary to enable the possible introduction of a nationwide programme to be considered at a later date. The two-year pilot phase ended in October this year and, having regard to an independent assessment of its operation and achievements, I am now considering proposals for a national programme. Pending a decision by the Government on the matter, it would not be appropriate for me to indicate any details at this stage.

In the meantime, in order to ensure that the enthusiasm and commitment generated by the pilot programme can be maintained and that the work can continue uninterrupted, I have extended the appointment of the co-ordinator staff to 28 February 1991.
