Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - British Nuclear Plants Safety.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

123 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Energy the steps he has taken and intends to take against the British authorities regarding the present operation and proposed development of British nuclear plants, to ensure maximum safety and the elimination of any threat to the State; and if he will make a statement on the possibility of taking legal action particularly in the European courts.

I have availed of every opportunity at senior political level and in international fora, to voice Ireland's concerns about nuclear safety. In particular, I have made the UK authorities aware of our opposition to the continued operation and expansion of the Sellafield plant and our overriding concern at the development of all nuclear plants, especially on the UK west coast.

The advice available to me is that there is at present little scope for taking court action regarding the operation of the UK's nuclear industry. Circumstances may make it possible to take such action in the future and the matter will certainly be kept under review.
