Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Parking at Knock Airport.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

146 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice if he has issued instructions to operators of hired vehicles to the effect that such vehicles will not be allowed to be parked in the vicinity and environs of Knock Airport, County Mayo; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that such operators are not allowed to bring such vehicles into the airport area itself which causes great inconvenience; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The arrangements for parking of vehicles in Knock Airport are a matter for the airport authorities. I have no function in the matter.

Parking of vehicles on public roads is subject to control and regulation by bylaw under section 90 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, which are made by the Garda Commissioner, with the consent of the Minister for the Environment and after consultation with the local authority concerned.

The Garda authorities have informed me that consultations have taken place with Mayo County Council with a view to the introduction of parking restrictions on the approach road to Knock Airport, so as to facilitate vehicle access in the event of an emergency at the airport. There are also, of course, provisions under the road traffic Acts prohibiting the obstruction of traffic in public places, on foot of which the gardaí may take action in appropriate circumstances.
