Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Greystones (Wicklow) Sewage Problems.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

159 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline in relation to the sewage problems at Greystones, County Wicklow (1) the cause of the problem (2) if the overflow of sewage into the sea consists of raw or macerated sewage (3) if this discharge is intermittent or continuous and (4) the plans he has to rectify this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the inadequacies of the existing sewage disposal arrangements at Greystones and the problems associated with sewage discharges there. In May of this year, I instructed Wicklow County Council to develop proposals for the provision of a secondary treatment plant that would serve both north and south areas of the town; this is to include examination of all the options for the treatment and disposal of sewage sludge. I also approved contract documents for a new foul and storm water collection system and I understand that tenders for this element of the scheme are to be submitted to my Department in the coming weeks.
