Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Review of SFADCo.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

46 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, following the continuous review of SFADCo, he is in a position to make a statement on the future role of this authority; and if he will outline the changes, if any, he proposes for them.

On 20 July last I announced that, following a review of the roles of SFADCo and the IDA, certain changes were being made in relation to responsibility for the promotion and development of overseas industry.

Specifically I indicated that responsibility for the promotion of Ireland as a location for overseas industry and for the development of such industry already located here would, in future, be a matter solely for the IDA.

I also indicated that SFADCo, as the regional authority, would continue to retain responsibility in its region for: all regional development; all indigenous industry; all free zone industry including aviation-related projects in the greater Shannon Airport area; all industrial properties; all local liaison with industry; payment of grants for IDA, post approval, for all industry in the region; infrastructural development and promotion of Plassey Technological park, including International Business Incubation Centre of Japan projects; Shannon Estuary promotion and tourist and air-traffic development.
At this stage I am satisfied that the new arrangements are working satisfactorily and I have no plans to make any further changes in the role of SFADCo.
