Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Range Sale.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

52 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that (1) the Red Barns Range, Dundalk has been sold for private development, (2) that this range is very important to the Defence Forces operation in the Border area and is the major training and operational range for the second, 28th and infantry battalions and the eighth Infantry battalion of the FCA, and (3) that the nearest other range is Gormanstown camp, County Meath, which at various times per year is operating at full capacity and will not be available to these units; his views on whether a mistake has been made in not taking steps to rectify this situation; and the steps he now proposes to take in the matter.

I am aware that property at Red Barns, Dundalk, County Louth which comprises land let to my Department for use as a military range has recently been sold. The change of ownership does not, however, affect the currency of the letting agreement with the Department. The Department propose to raise the question of the future use of the range with the new owners of the property.
