Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Michael O'Kennedy

Ceist:

78 Mr. Kennedy asked the Minister for the Marine the amount allocated for coastal erosion in each of the past three years; if he will outline his proposals in this regard for 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

State funding for coast protection was transferred from the Office of Public Works to the Department of the Marine on 1 January 1990.

While no funds were allocated for coast protection in 1988, I understand that the expenditure from the Vote for the Office of Public Works in 1989 for this purpose was £90,528.41. The allocation to my Department in 1990 is £1.1 million. This includes a sum of £950,000 to provide a 50 per cent grant to Wicklow County Council in respect of emergency protection works at Arklow. The allocation for 1991 is £633,000 and a programme of works is in preparation.
