Vol. 404 No. 2

Written Answers. - Naas (Kildare) School.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

125 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to (a) the urgent need for extra facilities at Two Mile House national school, Naas, County Kildare, and (b) the gross overcrowding, large classes and unfavourable pupil/teacher ratio at the school; if she intends to address this problem in the current year; if so, to what extent; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Two Mile House national school, Naas, County Kildare has four teachers at present and accommodation is in four permanent classrooms and a general purposes room.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement made between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery.

In the case of Two Mile House national school there were 132 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1989, which warrants the current staff of principal plus three assistants for the current school year.

The accommodation and staffing at the school are sufficient for current requirements.
