Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temple Bar Development Committee Report.

John Bruton

Ceist:

5 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Taoiseach the action he proposes to take on the report of the Temple Bar Development Committee; and the date upon which this report was furnished to him.

It is proposed as part of the Dublin European City of Culture Year in 1991 to implement the recommendations set down in the report of the Temple Bar Development Committee which envisages the development and enhancement of the area as a cultural, tourist and recreational centre.

Would the Taoiseach outline the schedule for the implementation of these recommendations and indicate what proportion of the works will be completed during 1991 and the transformation that is likely to occur in the Temple Bar area as a result of the implementation of this plan?

The project will get underway in 1991 as part of the city of culture general programme. There will be a Temple Bar development company, a small executive and staff, who will receive assistance from all the Departments and agencies. They will get on with the job of creating a Left Bank type area in the Temple Bar area. I would be grateful if the Deputy would not press me any further at the moment because there are some legal complexities which have to be dealt with.

Would the Taoiseach confirm that the developments in this area proposed by CIE will not now go ahead?

That is a separate matter.

It is a separate matter.

I share the Taoiseach's desire that this area be turned into what he calls the Left Bank of the city, but would he give the House some indication of who and by what method the properties are to be disposed of by CIE to developers?

This question deals with the Temple Bar development.

The properties in the Temple Bar area are in the ownership——

I am not permitting an extension beyond that subject matter.

The properties are in the ownership——

I will come back to the House as soon as I have a full picture on that aspect.
