Vol. 404 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Departmental Offices.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

11 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Labour the reason for the recent move by his Department to new offices at Adelaide Road, Dublin 2; the total amount of space now occupied by his Department; the total additional cost of acquiring or renting in one year the new accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department are currently in the process of relocating from Mespil Road to alternative accommodation at Adelaide Road.

The lease on the Mespil Road premises was due for review and a renewal would have given rise to greatly increased rental costs.

My Department have also reduced considerably in size in the past few years as a result of public service rationalisation and devolution of functions to State bodies and a smaller building was more appropriate to its present size. The Adelaide Road premises consists of approximately 36,000 sq. ft. of office accommodation compared with approximately 50,000 sq. ft. at Mespil Road.

The Adelaide Road premises had also in turn been vacated by other Government offices consequential on general decentralisation.

By relocating my Department to Adelaide Road significant savings in overall accommodation costs will be achieved.
