Vol. 405 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Longford Task Force Report.

Louis J. Belton

Ceist:

17 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has taken any action on the report of the task force set up in May 1989 by his Department to promote and expedite industrial and economic development in Longford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Longford Task force were established on the initiative of the Minister for Finance. The task force was chaired by the county manager and comprised public and private members, representative of interests in the area.

The report of the task force makes a number of recommendations regarding industrial development, the promotion of agriculture, tourism and services as well as providing for education, training and community development initiatives.

The recommendations in regard to industrial development have been brought to the IDA's attention. The IDA recognise the special needs of Longford and are promoting the area accordingly.

Will the Minister take into consideration the effects and the results of the task force? Will he set up such a task force in other unemployment black spots?

I cannot accept any extension of the question which relates to the Longford area.

I am sure the Minister has an opinion.

Will the Minister tell the House how many task forces are operating throughout the country because there seems to be——

This question specifically deals with Longford and I am not prepared to allow it to be extended.

There are task forces——

The Deputy should put down a question.
