Vol. 405 No. 6

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20(3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Nuala Fennell — if the Minister for the Environment will explain how, in 1990 £410,000 was allocated to scouting organisations and only £25,000 to guides through local authority allocation programmes; and if he will take action to prevent gender bias in all future allocations to such youth groups; (2) Deputy Jimmy Leonard — the need for a management structure to be set up to co-ordinate development funding in Border regions; (3) Deputy Michael Noonan (Limerick East)— If the attention of the Minister for Justice has been drawn to the fact that (a) up to 35 Limerick Corporation tenants and their families, at Moyross in Limerick, have abandoned their houses due to intimidation and (b) that these houses, which represent an investment by his Department of £1.5 million, are now unoccupied despite the demand for local authority houses in Limerick; and if he will take immediate steps to ensure that no further tenants have to leave their homes due to intimidation; (4) Deputy Michael Ferris — if the Minister for Industry and Commerce will urgently outline the efforts being made by his Department and the IDA to avert the closure of Digital, Clonmel, with a consequent loss of hundreds of jobs. (5) Deputy Therese Ahearn — if the Minister for Education will make a statement of her plans to ensure that Cashel will have proper education facilities immediately, in view of the legal difficulties which have now arisen in relation to Cashel community school, further delaying this badly needed project; (6) Deputy Roger Garland — the failure of the Office of Public Works to respond to considerable pressure of opinion from members of the public and the residents of Roundwood and surrounding areas regarding the siting of the interpretative centre at Luggala, County Wicklow; (7) Deputy Proinsias De Rossa — the continuing industrial dispute at River Valley Products, Finglas, Dublin; (8) Deputy Pat McCartan — the unsatisfactory record or prosecutions of drink driving cases which cause deaths; and the need for the Minister for Justice to implement the demands of the Mothers Against Drink Driving; (9) Deputy Eric Byrne — the problems created by under-age car drivers and the difficulties faced by the Garda in dealing with this matter; (10) Deputy Bernard Durkan — the question of whether adequate fire safety regulations have been adhered to in the reconstruction of Government Buildings, Merrion Street, and in particular, if ready access for the fire fighting authorities has been maintained bearing in mind the need for all such buildings to meet fire safety standards; and (11) Deputy Michael Moynihan — the decision of the Minister for the Marine in granting permission to Salmara Fisheries Limited to double their output from fish farms in the Kenmare river in view of impending court proceedings relating to this matter.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by the following Deputies: (1) Deputy Jimmy Leonard, (2) Deputy Pat McCartan and (3) Deputy Nuala Fennell.
