Ceist:217 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if the targets in relation to the control of costs in running of the railways as set out in November 1985 were met.

From 1984 onwards, target reductions in railway expenditures were introduced for CIE. These targets were generally not met, however, and were replaced in 1988 by a formula which limits the overall Exchequer subvention for CIE. Under this formula, the annual Exchequer subvention for CIE is fixed by reference to an annual 3.5 per cent cut in real terms on the 1988 subvention for the company.
