Ceist:

219 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has figures to outline the extent of utilisation of public transport in the Dublin area; and if there are any trends over the last five years that are detectable in this regard.

In calculating the information requested by the Deputy, annual passenger journeys are used as a measure of the utilisation of public transport modes.

Total annual passenger journeys undertaken on Dublin Bus and commuter rail services including DART during the period 1985-90 were as follows:

In the period 1985-90 total annual passenger journeys on the commuter rail services increased by almost 30 per cent. In the same period passenger journeys on Dublin Bus increased by 3 per cent.
