Vol. 405 No. 6

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicle Insurance.

William Cotter

Ceist:

26 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline Government policy in relation to the purchase of motor vehicle insurance by residents of this country in the Single Market after 1 January 1993.

The Deputy may be aware that a formal common position was adopted by the EC Council of Ministers under the Irish Presidency on 20 June 1990 on the EC Directive on freedom of services for motor insurance, which is due to be implemented by all member states before 20 November 1992.

When the Directive is implemented motor insurance cover will be available to Irish insurance consumers from Community insurers who comply with the appropriate supervisory requirements. The Government's policy is to provide insurance consumers with the widest possible choice of competitively priced motor insurance products in the Single Market while maintaining prudent standards for insurers and adequate protection for insurance consumers.
