Vol. 405 No. 6

Written Answers. - Grants for Foals.

Frank Crowley

Ceist:

100 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason foals of horses registered with Bord na gCapall are eligible for a £150 grant, whereas foals of horses registered with Weatherbys are not eligible for the grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Irish Horse Register, which relates to the sport horse sector, incorporates a horse improvement element as only progeny from selected stallions and from mares certified free from defects are eligible for entry. The Weatherby register is primarily for thoroughbreds. As this sector already receives considerable State support, it has been decided that the funds available under the operational programme for rural development should be deployed towards the sport horse sector.
