Vol. 405 No. 6

Written Answers. - Extradition Applications/Warrants.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

127 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice whether Ireland has applied for the extradition of any person from any other jurisdiction in the past ten years; if so, the nature of the crime involved; and if the applications were successful.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that the number of persons whose extradition has been sought by the Irish authorities in the period since 1 January, 1981 is 375. In the same period, 301 persons have been extradited to this country but that figure would include a small number of persons in whose case the request would have predated 1 January, 1981.

The other information sought in the question is not readily available from Garda records and it would not be possible to compile it without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of Garda time.

Ceist:

128 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of extradition warrants which have been served on this country in the past ten years and by whom, (b) the nature of the crime involved in each warrant, (c) the number of warrants which failed in the courts and the reason and (d) the number of successful prosecutions in the applicants jurisdiction of those extradited.

I am informed by the relevant authorities, the Department of Foreign Affairs in the case of requests made under Part II of the Extradition Act, 1965 and the Garda authorities in the case of requests made under Part III of that Act, that information in the form sought in the question is not readily available from their records for the entire period involved and that it would not be possible to compile it without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time.

The reports on the operation of Part III of the Extradition Act, 1965 in the years 1988 and 1989 which were made to the Houses of the Oireachtas by the Government pursuant to section 6 of the Extradition (Amendment) Act, 1987 contain the relevant readily available information in so far as Part III of the 1965 Act is concerned.
