Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cork Roads Maintenance.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

215 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the allocation of money from his Department for all roads maintenance, other than national primary and secondary roads, over the past five years for the city of Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

State road grants towards the cost of maintenance works on urban roads is provided in the form of an annual block grant which supplements the provisions made by local authorities from their own resources for the maintenance and improvement of these roads. The proportion of the grant to be applied to maintenance and the selection of works to be undertaken are matters for the local authorities subject to guidelines issued by my Department. The block grants to Cork Corporation over the past five years were as follows: 1986, £621,000; 1987, £621,000; 1988, £621,000; 1989, £621,000; 1990, £689,000.

The equivalent grant in 1991 is £810,000.
