Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Improvement Scheme.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

226 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a design proposal for road improvement from Station Road, Castlebar, towards Aughadrinagh, Castlebar, in County Mayo; if he has approved this design; if, in view of (1) the dangerous condition of this section of road and (2) the increasing traffic count he will allocate a special grant for this project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the question refers to Mayo County Council's proposals for improvement works on the N84 at Saleen, Castlebar. These proposals were submitted to my Department in June 1981 and approved in principle in July 1982. I understand that the scheme, as proposed, did not proceed because of land acquisition difficulties. In April 1986 further revised proposals were submitted to the Department for a section of the route at Saleen Bridge and approaches and approval in principle issued on 25 July 1986.

Because of the competing demands of other important road schemes both at national and local level it has not been possible to provide funding for this proposal to date.
