Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - UHF TV Broadcasting.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

284 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the number of UHF television channels which have been allocated by international agreement to Ireland; the number already in use; and the use he envisages for the others.

Under the relevant international agreement for UHF television broadcasting, Ireland has frequency spectrum assignments sufficient to establish four national UHF television channels. The two RTE television services currently use a mix of VHF and UHF assisgnments for transmission and in so doing utilise and effectively sterilise two of the four UHF channels. The third channel is in course of being licensed to the Independent Radio and Television Commission for use by TV3 and the fourth is being held to cater for any further developments in television broadcasting.
